Wellness Exams and Vaccines
Here at Aurora Pet Hospital, we realize the value in the annual physical examination for all of our patients. Annual physical examinations are essential in helping us identify medical problems early, before more serious conditions develop. We promote proactive medicine and nutrition early on, to minimize the onset of problems as pets age. Vaccinations are a very important component to preventative care for your pet. We regularly review our vaccination schedule, and strictly follow American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines. We individualize our vaccination protocol for each of our patients, based upon their lifestyle and risk factors. In this way, we eliminate the possibility of over-vaccinating any pet. Our staff will happily discuss with you, in detail, our current recommended vaccine protocol.
Surgical Procedures
Sometimes surgery may be the only way to successfully treat certain disabling, painful, or life threatening conditions. At Aurora Pet Hospital, we provide a wide array of surgical services, utilizing the most up-to-date methods, coupled with state-of-the-art equipment, to assure the safe and successful recovery of our patients. All dogs and cats placed under anesthesia here have their vital signs continuously monitored with Cardell veterinary monitors.
Our doctors perform a wide variety of soft tissue surgeries. These include sterilization (spay and neuter), caesarean-section, cystotomy, foreign body removal, wound repair, and complex mass removals, just to name a few.

Spaying and Neutering
We recommend spaying and neutering all dogs and cats not intended for breeding. Recently published research indicates that 6 months is the optimal age for dogs to undergo this surgery. Kittens/cats should be spayed/neutered any time after 12 weeks of age. This surgery has the following benefits:

Dentistry
Just like humans, dogs and cats can suffer from plaque buildup, gum recession, periodontal disease, and resulting tooth loss. General anesthesia is always required to allow a dog or cat's teeth to be thoroughly cleaned and polished. Plaque removal above and below the gum surface is performed on each tooth with the used of an ultrasonic cleaner. After cleaning, the teeth are polished. During the course of the professional dentistry, the licensed veterinary technician will examine each tooth for cracks and decay that may necessitate an extraction. At Aurora Pet Hospital, dental extractions are only performed by our veterinarians, who are highly skilled in these surgical procedures. |
Orthopedic Surgery
This deals with the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments. Besides repair of bone fractures, our doctors are skilled in performing anterior cruciate ligament repairs, femoral head and neck resections, medial patellar subluxation correction, and a variety of other orthopedic surgeries. |

Digital X-ray

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, just like visible light. In a health care setting, a machine produces individual x-ray particles called photons. These particles pass through the body. A computer cassette is used to record the images that are created.
The test is performed in a radiology room by a licensend veterinary technician. The positioning of the patient, x-ray machine, and cassette, depends on the type of study and area of interest. Multiple individual views may be required. Much like conventional photography, motion causes blurry images on radiographs, and thus, patients may require sedation to temporarily inhibit their mobility during the very brief (less than 1 second) exposure.
Here at Aurora Pet Hospital, we have invested in digital radiography. The image (radiograph) is captured on a specialized cassette, which is then placed in a machine for transer to the computer. This process takes only seconds. Once the image is captured, your veterinarian can enhance it if necessary. This allows the highest quality diagnostic image to be produced each and every time.
If necessary, the radiograph can be transmitted over the Internet, to a board certified veterinary radiologist, for his/her review. We also have the ability to quickly send radiographs to referral veterinary specialists when necessary.

Laser Therapy
Clinical studies and real-world use over several decades have proven that laser therapy alleviates pain and inflammation, reduces swelling, stimulates nerve regeneration, and cells involved in tissue repair.
Laser therapy allows for improved patient outcomes:
Deep, soothing laser therapy provides a drug-free option for enhanced patient care. It produces effective relief of pain, inflammation, and swelling. Laser therapy is extremely well tolerated by pets, and has no known side effects. In addition, it may decrease the need for surgery and medications, reduces healing time, requires no sedation or clipping, and lastly, is quick to administer (approximately 3 to 6 minutes per site). As an additional benefit, it allows pet owners to be present and feel that they are participating in the healing process
Laser therapy provides versatility:
It is applicable for all animals across a wide range of conditions routinely seen in veterinary practice. These include: Osteoarthritis, degenerative joint and disc disease, hip dysplasia, a wide variety of dermatologic disorders (eg, hot spots, interdigital dermatitis, acral lick granuloma), acute and chronic otitis (ear inflammation), periodontal disease (eg, feline stomatitis), improved post-operative healing (eg, to treat incision pain and reduce inflammation before the patient wakes up), and treatment of acute traumas (eg, sprains or strains without radiographic changes or ruptured ligaments).

Microchipping
Did you know that 1 in 3 pets goes missing during its lifetime, and that sadly, without proper ID, 90% never return home? A microchip for dogs and cats provides the very best protection, with permanent ID, that can never be removed or become impossible to read.
A microchip implant is virtually painless, and takes just seconds to perform. It is about the size of a grain of rice, and helps you stay connected to the pet you love forever. Put your pets safety first, and allow us implant one, giving your pet the best chance for being reunited with you if ever lost.

Laboratory
Aurora Pet Hospital has a complete in-house diagnostic laboratory. The Idexx Vetlab Station is a very sophisticted computerized veterinary laboratory. It allows us to run a wide range of diagnostic tests, with accurate results available within minutes.
It consists of the Lasercyte DX hematology analyzer for performing complete blood counts; the Catalyst DX analyzer for blood chemistries; the SNAPshot DX analyzer for reading the SNAP 4DX Plus tests, providing consistent and accurate results in 10 minutes or less; the Vetlab UA analyzer for accurate urinalysis, and the Coag DX analyzer for determining blood clotting parameters.
All laboratory results are immediately posted into the electronic patient record when completed. Whatsmore, using their "smartphones" and the Idexx "Vetconnect" app, each doctor has the capability of instantly receiving most test results, even when away from the hospital.
Besides our Vetlab, we have a high-speed centrifuge for performing fecal centrifugation, the most accurate way to check fecal specimens for the presence of internal parasites.
Using our microscope, we can also perform cytological examinations of urine, blood cells, ear smears, fine needle aspirates, and a variety of dermatology conditions.

Nutritional Counseling
"We are what we eat", and the same is true for cats and dogs! Here at Aurora Pet Hospital, we realize the importance proper nutrition can make in the lives of our own pets, and of course our patients as well. With so many choices out there, and the proverbial "Dr. Google" providing his/her "two cents", it is no wonder it is so confusing choosing what to feed your dog or cat.
The good new is, that consumers have forced pet food companies to provide better and safer choices. There are quality fixed-formula pet foods available, made with meat as the number one ingredient, and with no added dyes or chemical preservatives. We will be happy to recommend one for your pet, and in fact we encourage you to ask us to!!
Besides carrying some Hills Science Diet and Royal Canin pet foods, we carry a full range of prescription diets to help treat and control a wide range of diseases in pets.
Obesity is the most common nutritional disease seen in dogs and cats today. Health risks associated with obesity include: arthritis, ruptured ligaments, intervertebral disk disease, diabetes, and heart disease. When necessary, we are pleased to be able to provide a computerized wieght loss program that will allow an obese pet to successfully reach their ideal weight.
