Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a very important component to preventative care for your pet.  Thanks to the development of effective vaccines your pet can be protected against numerous infectious diseases.

We regularly review our vaccination schedule with the American Veterinary Medical Association recommendations to reduce the possibility of over-vaccinating your pet. Our staff will happily discuss with you, in detail, our current vaccine protocol.

Puppies should begin their examinations and vaccinations at 6-8 weeks of age.  All puppies will be given a series of vaccinations which will protect them against Canine Distemper,  Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Canine Parainfluenza, Parvoviral Enteritis, Leptospirosis, and Bordetella.  They will also receive a Rabies vaccination, which will protect them for 1 year, as soon as possible after reaching 12 weeks of age.

Kittens should begin their examinations and vaccinations at 6-8 weeks of age.  All kittens will be given a series of vaccinations which will protect them against Feline Distemper, Calicivirus and Rhinotracheitis.  They will also receive a Rabies vaccination after 12 weeks of age which will protect them for 1 year.  All kittens will also be tested for the presence of Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) infection.  Those testing negative will be administered a series of two FeLV vaccinations.  This will afford them one year of protection against this all too common viral infection.  Because the FeLV and FIV infection may be hidden, undetectable in the body for about 30 days after infection, a second FeLV/FIV test is recommended for all cats when presented for their first annual examination and booster vaccinations.
