General anesthesia is always required to allow a dog or cat’s
teeth to be thoroughly cleaned and polished. Plaque removal above
and below the gum surface is performed on each tooth with the
used of an ultrasonic cleaner. Just like human, pets can suffer
from plaque build up, gum recession, periodontal disease, and
resulting tooth loss. After cleaning, the teeth are polished.
During the course of the dentistry, the licensed veterinary technician
will examine each tooth for cracks and decay that may necessitate
an extraction. At Aurora Pet Hospital, dental extractions are
only performed by our veterinarians, who are highly skilled in
these surgical procedures.
